ACLU FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST GEORGIA LAW

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a class-action lawsuit yesterday against Georgia’simmigration law aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration in the state.

HB 87, set to go into effect July ,1 allows police to ask about immigration status when questioning suspects in certain criminal investigations.  It also allows the imposition of prison sentences for people who knowingly transport illegal immigrants during the commission of a crime and asserts that workers convicted of using fake identification to get a job could be sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined $250,000.

The ACLU argues that the immigration law will turn Georgia into a police state and is unconstitutional because it undermines federal immigration enforcement priorities. Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal is confident that the judges considering the case will uphold the new Georgia law.
